Scott Coupland, Ph.D.

Dr. Scott Coupland has been at RTS Orlando since 1999. His counseling career began in 1989 after spending a number years as a cowboy and then a restaurant manager. He presently serves as an Associate Professor of Counseling and the Academic Director of the M.A. in Counseling degree program. After earning two master's degrees he then completed a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy from Texas Tech University. His teaching at RTS is enriched by clinical experience in medical school, hospital, university, and church settings. He has authored articles published in several professional journals, and he is a clinical member and approved supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. As a licensed marriage and family therapist he maintains an active private practice. His wife, Joan, is a physician and they have two daughters, Brynne and Cami. He is an avid scuba diver and saltwater aquarist.  

Jim Coffield, Ph.D.

Dr. Jim Coffield came to RTS Orlando full-time in 2003 after serving as a professor at other educational institutions. His background includes working within the church as a youth pastor and counselor, and in educational settings as a teacher and basketball coach. He presently serves as an associate professor of counseling and the clinical director of the M.A. in Counseling degree program. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in counseling psychology and is a licensed psychologist. Dr. Coffield brings a wide variety of teaching and clinical experiences. His clinical experience includes counseling in private practice, college, church-based, and hospital settings. He enjoys the classroom and brings over twenty years of teaching experience. His teaching reflects his love of story and humor. His research and clinical interests include adoption, special needs children, narrative psychology, and counselor training. He is married to Mona and they have two sons, Skylar and Pearce.

Adjunct Faculty

Sharon Hersh, M.A.

Sharon Hersh received an M.A. from Colorado Christian University, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She is the mother of two college-aged children and she is a frequent speaker at universities, seminaries, conferences, and retreats. Sharon has written numerous books such as Bravehearts: Unlocking the Courage to Love with Abandon; Mom, Sex Is No Big Deal; Mom, I Feel Fat! Becoming your Daughter's Ally in Developing a Healthy Body Image; Mom, I Hate My Life! Becoming Your Daughter's Ally Through the Emotional Ups and Downs of Adolescence; Mom, Everyone Else Does. Sharon is also the Director of Women's Recovery and Renewal, a retreat ministry to struggling women and their caregivers. She lives with her family in Lone Tree, Colorado. She hates to do laundry and has completed three marathons!

Guest Faculty

Larry Shyers, Ph.D.

Dr. Larry Shyers is a licensed mental health counselor and has been in private practice in Mount Dora, Florida, since 1980. He serves as an adjunct professor at RTS Orlando and at the University of Central Florida. He completed master degrees at Stetson University and the University of Central Florida, and his doctoral work at the University of Florida. For eight years he served on the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling , six of which he was Board Chairman. He currently serves on Probable Cause Panel for this same Board. He conducts a variety of workshops, seminars, and training for licensed professionals, churches, and foster care workers throughout the United States. He is married and has two children.

Oviedo Counseling Clinic

Sarah Baker, M.A.

Sarah M. Baker is the Director of Counseling Ministries for Northland, A Church Distributed. Northland and RTS have partnered together to provide the Oviedo Counseling Clinic since 1994. She received her bachelor's degree from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL in Sport and Wellness Management. She has an M.A. in Counseling from RTS Orlando and is a licensed mental health counselor. She teaches classes at Northland. She is married to Zach and they have two sons.
