Fall 2006 Spiritual Life Retreat"He has brought me to His banqueting house, and His banner over me is love."
Feasting Together
You are invited to move past mere talk about your spiritual life. This weekend, you will will engage God and others in the seminary community, and you will explore your motivations, imaginations, and practices as together we work towards a true Christian spirituality shaped by God's Word. So come ... let us feast together on the realities of the gospel!
Christians don't simply learn or study or use Scripture;
we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that
it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water,
missions into all the world, heaing and evangelism
and justice in Jesus' name"
(Peterson, Eat This Book, 18).
The Spiritual LIfe Conference historically involved three lectures given by a respected speaker on the spiritual life of a seminary. This was accompanied by songs and prayer directed by a renowned musician/worship leader. While this has been helpful, it left something to be desired ... it is time we experimented with a more immersive format that will not only talk about spiritual life, but will encourage us to both examine our current personal and corporate spiritual dynamics, and also to grow together in real intimacy with God as well as kingdom passion.
Who better to lead us through such an exploration than Rev. Mike Malone. Over the years, Mike has pursued a grace-filled spiritual life for himself and the congregation of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church (he only recently left there to plant a work in Vero Beach). Mike is also well acquainted with the RTS/Orlando community and its unique contours, challenges, joys and needs. He expresses a real desire to see Holy Spirit stir us on towards gospel realities, to see the God of the Scriptures.
In addition, Reggie Kidd will lead us in times of song and prayer, knowing that this is one key avenue to corporate spiritual growth and learning. Alumni Kelly and Mike Winkler will ask how necessary relationships within a community are to intimacy with God and missional fervor, while professors Jim Coffield and Chuck DeGroat will help us explore both our hearts and the ancient practice of lectio divina as one way our community might grow into God's Big reality of creation, redemption and blessing. The retreat takes place Friday evening, September 22, beginning with registration at 6:30 PM.
We will serve coffee and desserts during this time until the official welcome at 7:00 PM.
The retreat begins again on Saturday morning, September 23 NOTE: Saturday morning starts at 8:30 AM (a change from the original announcement)!
