Thinking about seminary? Why RTS/Charlotte?
When God calls an individual to serve in Christian ministry, no one would expect “the called” to respond half heartedly; such an irony could never exist. I have always defined the call to ministry as being a call to full time service, for the rest of your life, with all of your life. That is, you sense a call from and by God, a call that you believe is etched in His eternal plan. You sense that He has had His hand on you from before the beginning of time for this sole purpose: to serve Him with all of the energy, enthusiasm and effort that He provides for your life. He has prepared you for this! You want to use every moment of the rest of your life to proclaim the riches of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the wonders of the gospel, the glory of the cross and the life transformation that resurrection life in Christ provides. What a privilege, what an honor, what a calling!
If the above describes your sense of calling to the ministry, then I would strongly suggest that you consider seminary training. By God’s good grace, there are many fine seminaries available for your contemplation, with many considerations for choosing a seminary. But, if the Lord has led you to this website, then I would like to briefly introduce you to the RTS/Charlotte campus. I would like to answer the question, “Why RTS/Charlotte?”
Over the years, prospective students have frequently asked me, “What is the strength of the RTS/Charlotte campus?” My thoughts always go directly to this answer: “RTS/Charlotte provides a wonderful balance of academic training with pastor-scholar professors, in the context of ‘hands on’ ministry experience.” I have served the campus of RTS/Charlotte for over 17 years and have been blessed to see the growth of an extremely capable faculty of pastor-scholars throughout those years. I am confident that, with the Lord’s blessing, we will provide the necessary academic foundation for anyone who senses God’s call to the ministry. However, the beauty of our campus environment is that we are located in a wonderful setting of local churches (and other ministries). These churches are places where you (and your family) can grow spiritually and they are also dynamic contexts where you can grow in ministry experience and training. RTS/Charlotte students are so often enabled to receive real life ministry experience under capable and seasoned local pastors, leaders and mentors. This combination of classroom learning and practical ministry involvement is indeed the strength of RTS/Charlotte.
I would like to invite you to visit the RTS/Charlotte campus. Here you can meet our motivated students, our approachable faculty members, who reflect the above mentioned balance of scholarship and ministry and you can learn more about these local ministry opportunities. You will also discover what we are doing in our campus institutes, the IRCM and the CMI and the value of our Women of RTS ministry, designed specifically for our female students and seminary spouses. You’ll love the city of Charlotte (the Queen City) and all that our vibrant environment has to offer you, as one following this great calling to minister in God’s kingdom.
And, of course, I would love to assist you in any way possible.
Yours, for His sake,
Rod Culbertson, D. Min.
