ORLANDO RIVERA/Guest Faculty
Rev. Rivera has an M.Div. from RTS Orlando and an MBA from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. He is currently Assistant Professor and Department Head of Pastoral Ministry at Nyack College, NY. He also serves as pastor at Mount Vernon Alliance Church in Mount Vernon, NY. Prior to moving to New York, he served as pastor at Northland—A Church Distributed, taught Business Ethics at Rollins College, and owned and operated two Nature’s Table Café franchises in Orlando, FL. He is an alum of Lifework Leadership Orlando.
Rev. Rivera’s passion is summed up in the words of the apostle Paul: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This verse gets to the heart of the way he views life, that is, all activities and professions are vehicles to glorify God in the world. Professor Rivera endeavors to awaken his students to the sacredness of all human enterprises as an opportunity to make the kingdom of God visible on earth as it is in heaven.
Surveying the meaning of work in God’s revealed purpose.
Understanding how world-views and culture affect one’s work.
Working today in the light of God’s Word.
Relating work, ministry, calling, mission, and globalization.
People are engaged in work during most of their waking hours. This course explores the meaning and ministry of work. Having a theology of work is critical for all who are engaged in a “secular” occupation. It is also important for pastors whose main challenge is equipping and empowering their congregations to serve God in their primary arena of service—their work. Work is intended for meaning, ministry, and joy. This course recovers God's soul-satisfying vision of work as sacred service to God and humanity.
The Theology of Work Seminar (TOW) is a hands-on interactive experience that will help the participants apply biblical, theological, historical, and cultural understanding to their workplace. The TOW Seminar will also provide tools for pastors to help equip their congregation members to be witnesses in the context of their 9 to 5 jobs. Case-studies, workplace testimonies and group discussion will be used in the seminar.
