Bio
Don Sweeting was appointed president of the RTS Orlando campus in 2010 and named the James Woodrow Hassell Professor of Church History the following year. Dr. Sweeting regularly teaches core and elective courses on church history and practical theology.
After earning a master’s degree from Oxford University, Dr. Sweeting completed a Ph.D. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His dissertation explored relations between evangelicals and Catholics in the U.S. in the late 20th Century.
An ordained minister in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), Dr. Sweeting served as senior pastor of Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Greenwood Village (a Denver suburb) for 12 years. His ministry there culminated with his church hosting the denomination’s annual general assembly in 2010. In addition to pastoring, Dr. Sweeting also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Denver Seminary. Before moving to Colorado, he served for 11 years as the founding pastor of Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church in Northern Illinois.
Dr. Sweeting is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and currently serves on the boards of the National Association of Evangelicals and Colorado Christian University. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Fellowship of Evangelical Seminary Presidents and on the Theology Committee of the World Reformed Fellowship.
The RTS community appreciates Dr. Sweeting’s approachability and his heart for preparing students for various aspects of ministry. He meets with students at a weekly lunch gathering called Pastors in Training to help prepare future church leaders for the most practical aspects of ministry. Since coming to RTS, Dr. Sweeting has also instituted the President’s Community Forums, The Nicole Institute of Baptist Studies and a new seminary mentoring program. In Spring of 2013, he began a daily radio show called “TAKE 5” on local WTLN 95 AM.
Dr. Sweeting and his wife Christina have three adult sons and a teenage daughter.
