Dr. Brown's obituary

July 12, 2007: Dr. Brown went home to be with the Lord, Sunday evening, July 8, 2007 at 8:25 pm, passing peacefully and surrounded by family members and close friends.

Dr. Brown’s funeral, held on Thursday, July 12 in Dunnellon, Florida, was a glorious event, according to his wife Grace. Two ministers, the Reverend Keeth Staton of the Springs Presbyterian Church of Dunnellon and Anglican Rector Dr. Jon Shuler, conducted the service. The Brown’s son-in-law, Michael, also spoke and paid tribute to Dr. Brown. Grace said that music dominated the service with songs being sung prior to the service, as people entered, and throughout the service, numbering as least ten songs sung, providing the service with a spirit of worship and joy. Those paying their respect to Dr. Brown came from numerous states, including Florida, North Carolina, Illinois and Arizona. Thank you for your prayers.

A memorial service will be held in Charlotte on Saturday, July 28 at 2:00 pm, at Carmel Presbyterian Church, across the street from the RTS/Charlotte campus.  Accomodations will be available at the South Park Courtyard by Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/), located at 6023 Park South Drive, 704-552-7333 (rooms cost $109 or $119/night; if you are looking for less expensive accommodations, please contact the RTS Admissions office, 704-688-4220, for a list of other local hotels).

After the Memorial Service, a reception with the family will follow in the A Building of the RTS/Charlotte campus. Later, a meeting will be held for those who want to gather with the Brown family and reminisce, so please consider staying overnight on the 28th if visiting from out of town and you wish to attend this special time. The meeting to reminisce is planned to be held at the South Park Courtyard by Marriott.

July 3, 2007: Dr. Brown had a very lucid moment a few days ago and asked his son-in-law, Michael, what was wrong with him (he has been on a lot of medication for pain). When Michael explained his condition to him and that there appears to be no possibility of improvement, Dr. Brown accepted it and asked that prayer be made on his behalf that the Lord would take him home quickly. He has been doing very poorly since that conversation and since this is his prayer request and he is ready, please honor it. He did say some weeks ago to one of his former students from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Trinity International University), "In view of my swallowing and speaking difficulties, my short-term prognosis is unknown but the long-term prognosis is good." Amen!

June 29, 2007: Dr. Brown continues, in many ways, to be about the same. He continues to decline, but slowly. Probably the newest development is a negative, in that he is now experiencing more pain. He is receiving some pain relief through stronger drug treatment which makes his alert hours more bearable. His family remains with him and other relatives are visiting him. He could remain in this declining condition for quite some time, so pray for pain relief and endurance.

June 22, 2007: Dr. Brown continues to decline, but has had enough strength to visit RTS twice this past week. Grace says that the doctor said that he might be around for a while yet. He is not well though and is now experiencing some pain and receiving more medication. Hospice is very involved with him. His kids and grandkids are with them indefinitely for now. Dr. Brown is sleeping a lot, especially after receiving pain meds. Because their family is in town, Grace requests that there be no visits for now.

June 18, 2007: Mrs. Brown has just informed us that Dr. Brown's cancer has now reached the critical stages. Please pray for Dr. Brown and his wife as they walk through these difficult days. Mrs. Brown is not certain how much time he has remaining with us, as it could be days or weeks, and we will keep you updated.
