It has been said that reading the Scriptures in translation is like kissing your bride through a veil. The original languages carry certain nuances that may be covered in translation, and we want our students to be able to take off the veil and do the significant labor of exegesis in the original languages. To that end we drive students to learn the original languages and to use them repeatedly throughout the curriculum.
Students begin by taking Hebrew and Greek in their first year, reaching a level of proficiency that will enable them to work efficiently in the original languages. Then in the Biblical Studies curriculum our students continue to hone their skills through translation and exegesis in assignments and testing. The languages are used in Systematic Theology and Practical Theology, and they become an important part of the preaching curriculum as we go from translation to exegesis to exposition.
For intensive language immersion RTS Jackson hosts the Summer Institute for Biblical Languages.
