Championship Results
Harper/Rinawma/Gault def. Perry/Craig/Makashinyi (15-7, 15-4, 15-8)

After facing a true test against the very athletic, hard-hitting, court-covering McMahon/McMahon/Kiel team, Harper/Rinawma/Gault entered the finals sharp.  After picking up a new teammate for their injured player (Laura Estrada, who’s out with back pain—please pray for her), Estrada and Todd determined they were too sore from the YMCA Flag Football game (a story in and of itself) to play volleyball and forfeited to Perry/Craig/Makashinyi.

The championship game was a rematch of last Spring’s finals, and a handful of spectators came out after flyers had been posted around campus.  The games were similar to the Spring 2007 Championship.  Jonathan Craig was everywhere, tracking down balls no one should be able to get and hitting powerful winners.  Isaac Makashinyi skillfully placed balls just over the net or deep in the corner, and Susannah Perry passed well and set up her teammates beautifully.  But in the end, the all-around skill of Harper/Rinawma/Gault was too much to overcome.  Harper/Rinawma/Gault won the volleyball championship 15-7, 15-4, 15-8 and didn’t drop a game the entire tournament.

As it turns out, there wasn’t much of an “after-party.”  In fact, some of the championship team stayed around and played pickup with a few of the spectators afterwards, perhaps in an attempt to bring back Thursday night volleyball for the rest of the semester.

2007 Spring Tennis Tournament

Singles
In singles round robin play, Trey Owens shocked everyone by wearing shorts shorter than the 1970s, complete with headbands and wristbands to complete the throwback feel.  Justin Estrada’s learning curve was remarkable as someone new to the game, and Laura McMahon, the lone woman in the bracket held her own and demonstrated that she belonged.  Jonathan Craig beat McMahon to establish the 3rd seed from Group B and then beat Owens to advance to the semis in the tournament.

The first round of the singles tournament went pretty much as expected.  In the second round, Aaron Bae (who came out of the stronger Group B as the first seed) dismissed Jonathan Craig efficiently, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the finals.  The Kiel/Gault matchup pitted the 1 seed from Group A against the 2 seed from Group B, and Gault played way over his head to dismiss Kiel, 6-2, 6-0.

The finals would see a rematch of the round robin game in which Bae dispatched Gault easily 6-4, 6-3.  When the match started at 2:00pm in Gault’s neighborhood it was a scorching 92 degrees with a heat index over 100.  There were several spectators that endured the heat (albeit in the shade): Caroline Harper, Laura McMahon, Nicki Shepard, Daniel Leavengood, and Stephanie, Natalie (6), and Nina (2) Gault.  Even the Gault’s dog Dillon was in attendance.  Bae got a break right out of the gate to jump up 2-0 in the first set, but Gault fought back and forced a tie breaker at the end of the first set.  Bae won the tie breaker 7-3 to secure the first set.  Gault jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but you could see the heat beginning to take effect.  Bae spun topspin forehands in, but Gault held on to take the second set 6-4.  The third set started with Bae’s thigh cramping, but it was Gault that would eventually succumb to the heat as Bae ran away in the third winning the championship 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Mixed Doubles
The round robin play in the mixed doubles tournament saw the Hoffeckers dominate Group A in spite of Jonathan Craig notching Pam Hoffecker when Jonathan was serving and Pam was at the net.  Perry/Craig bested the Estradas 7-5.  In Group B, McMahon/Bae dominated beating Harper/Gault and the Coopers.  Between rain and scheduling issues, Bomgarner/Kiel only managed one match which they lost to Harper/Gault.

The first round of the tournament went pretty well as expected.  In the second round, both matches were epic three-set matches.  McMahon/Bae, the tournament favorites, started out in glowing form taking set one from Bomgarner/Kiel 6-3 and then got out quickly in the second to lead 3-0.  But Bomgarner/Kiel managed to swing the momentum and steal the second set on the tiebreaker 7-6.  They carried that momentum into the third and won going away 6-3.  In the other semi, Harper/Gault won the first set handily over the Hoffeckers 6-3 and went up 3-0 in the second set when Pam Hoffecker decided to take over the game.  The Hoffeckers amazingly won the next 11 straight games, albeit with a two-day rain delay in the midst of their run.  The Hoffeckers took the second set 6-3 and were up 5-0 in the third set.  In a remarkable comeback, Harper/Gault won the next 6 games, and then managed to pull out the third set 12-10.

The finals between Harper/Gault and Bomgarner/Kiel had been previewed in round robin play where Harper/Gault won 6-3.  In the very first game of the final match, Gault broke his strings but fortunately Kiel was kind enough to loan his second racket.  Harper/Gault won the first set handily 6-3, but in the second Bomgarner (who had a baby just 4 months ago) started to find a rhythm and took points at the net to make the second set interesting.  But Harper’s superb baseline play, steady serving, and timely net winners proved to be too much.  Harper/Gault took the championship 6-3, 7-5.

2007 Spring Soccer Tournament
Before we get to the finals, we are compelled to make several observations about Round Robin play.  Team Tardy (0-2) gets the award for “most aggressive scheduling.”  As a late entry (hence the team name), they were in the tournament for only 5 days and managed to schedule 2 games.  Compare that to the Estrada/Park/Moon team (1-0) which was in the tournament for 2 weeks and only managed to play one game (the Brits think that Justin must have been busy doing his hair).  The only game EPM managed to play was against Team Servetus (0-3) and that’s no indication of talent—a team of Curry, Hoffecker, and Jussely could have given Team Servetus a match.  EPM was the biggest disappointment in the tournament because the experts thought Estrada + 2 stiffs would have been the team to beat—and Park and Moon were both excellent players!  Team Servetus was the one team everyone wanted to schedule because they lived up to their billing as the doormat of the tourney—it was an easy win!

Futbol Finale: Team Britexico Wins Championship
By virtue of accruing the most wins during two weeks of Round Robin play (see results and standings above), Team Britexico (Layzell/Forsyth/Terrazas, 2-0) squared off against FC Malawi (Giesman/Barnes/Mhango, 2-0) in the finals.  The finals pitted two outstanding scorers against each other (Forsyth and Mhango), and both scorers were surrounded by excellent complementary players gifted with skill, quickness, and speed.
Team Britexico began the match by playing mind games with FC Malawi as one of their teammates was 45 minutes late for the match (I can only imagine then, knowing Giesman and Barnes, that the match was thus played under protest).  Apparently the mind games worked as Team Britexico skillfully mounted an 8-2 lead on the off-balance FC Malawi.  Well, perhaps we shouldn’t take “skillfully” too seriously.  At one point, Forsyth couldn’t locate a ball in the air which subsequently hit him in the head and went into the goal.  Nevertheless, FC Malawi then put on a little 4-0 run of their own to bring them within 8-6, showing that they would not go down without a fight.  But the fight was futile, as Team Britexico finished them off and won the championship by a score of 10-6.  Just goes to show that we Americans know little about the game of futbol.

2007 Spring 3-on-3 Coed Volleyball Tournament Results
After Round Robin results seeded the single elimination tournament, several epic matches ensued.  The Perry/Craig/Makashinyi team advanced to the finals by beating Estrada/Estrada/Todd team 3-1 in an exciting match in which Susannah overcame flu-like symptoms to win the last two games.
In the Championship game, the Perry/Craig/Makashinyi would face Harper/Rinawma/Gault, a team that already beat them (15-6, 15-11) in the Round Robin of Group A.  The rematch began with Perry’s team handing Harper’s team their first loss of the tournament, 15-12.  Reeling from the loss and set back on their heels, Harper’s team responded by winning the next 3 games 15-6, 15-2, 15-1 to secure the Gold medal.
In the Bronze medal game, Estrada/Estrada/Todd faced off against Layzell/Layzell/Beavers in a classic back-and-forth tussle.  The Layzells won the first game 16-14 to go up 1-0, but the Estradas fought back in the next frame to win 15-11 and tie up the match one game all.  They traded the next two games so the match was tied 2-2 going into the deciding game.  The Layzells won 15-13, securing the Bronze medal and giving Round Robin Group A 1st through 3rd place.
1st: Harper/Rinawma/Gault
2nd: Perry/Craig/Makashinyi
3rd: Layzell/Layzell/Beavers
4th: Estrada/Estrada/Todd
(They sound like a bunch of law firms, don't they?)
Many thanks to all who participated in the excellent and fun volleyball that was played throughout the tournament.

2006 Fall Ping Pong Tournament
While the tournament has moved slower than molasses in winter, Will Joseph and Aaron Bae finally met at the end of the Winner's Bracket.  Aaron defeated Will in 3 straight games and immediately left the country (okay, he doesn't leave until Dec 12) in order to avoid Will coming out of the Loser's Bracket.  Since the Loser's Bracket has moved so slowly, and Aaron has fled the country, we will officially declare the first inaugural Ping Pong Tournament at an end and name Aaron Bae the champion.  Congrats to Aaron and many thanks to all those who participated.
